TF2's Economy

Send him a trade offer...

Team Fortress Two, the video game, has an economy. It's not dollars. In fact, the value gained from this economy is only accessible and transmittable through Steam. You can put your dollars into it, but you can't get any dollars out of it, assuming you want to use those dollars for non-Steam uses. Even then, it's not even like people are buying things with money from each other. They are using the currency for Team Fortress Two: items. That's right: Team Fortress Two has a trading economy.

"I'll give you this hat for your hat."

Is the economy thriving? I think it is... I'm not a trader, but I haven't seen anything bad happening on the internet, so I think it's fine. There have been at least two depressions, if I remember correctly, but, being a video game, the community was able to get out of the very quickly.

I believe the trading systems in Team Fortress Two resemble more of a capitalist economy. The item is yours until you give/sell it to someone else. Whether or not you got a good deal on it is up to your trader-smarts.

The economy is constantly added to through the introduction of new items through a system called, crates. Take a crate, get a key, open the crate, and if you get something good, but don't want to keep it, trade it. I myself have put an item or two on the Steam Community Market and made some Steam money. It was a good feeling.

Speaking of Steam money, that is one of the four currencies, the other three being items (mostly unusual hats), keys, and scrap. These currencies intertwine. For example, you can use keys and/or scrap to get items, and vise-versa. What is probably the biggest trading system for the community (besides TF2's built-in trading system), is:

Trading isn't for everyone, neither is buying things from the community market, but just because not everyone participates in Team Fortress Two's economy doesn't mean it's bad one. Valve prides themselves on such a luxurious community system that allows players to sell there wears to the highest bidder. They're making money, we're making money, and everyone has a smile on their face.
